Merc. 'D' Division cricket gets five newcomers

Ceylon Cold Stores has come forward to sponsor the Mercantile Cricket Association's 'D' division 50 overs League tournament, for the 'Elephant Lemonade' Trophy, commencing 15th November 2003. Fourteen teams, including five newcomeres to this division will compete in two groups.

The nine teams retained from last season are HNB 'D' (defending champions), David Peiris Motor Co. & Seylan Bank 'B' (last years losing semi-finalists), along with Colombo Dockyard, Confifi Group Hotels, Maritime Holdings, Trans Asia Hotel, ACL Cables and Mercantile Merchant Bank.

The five newcomeres are - HSBC 'A", Delmage Group and Hayaleys Group (gaining promotions from Group 'E'), Slimline Group (gaining a promotion from Group 'F') and Steza Marketing.

Steza Marketing, the 'babes' of Mercantile cricket, led by OldPaterite, Indunil Anthony with a bunch of fresh school-leavers is bound to make a big impact in their debut.

The league stage which has 42 matches will commence on 15th Nov. the venues being, MCA, D.S. Senanayake College Grounds, Wesley College grounds and Health Dept. SC Grounds, scheduled to be completed on 20th December 2003.

At the completion of the round-robin stage, the first two teams of each group will qualify for the criss-cross semi-finals on 27th December. The final will be played in the new year - 03rd January 2004.

CCS has offered 03 special awards for the league stage "Best Batsman", "Best Bowler" and "Man-of-the-Series", and 01 for the final - "Man-of-the-match.

For the first time a tournament ball was introduced to this division, as done in MCA's Premier division and Division II. All matches will be played with the nominated ball by the tournament committee.

All this was revealed to the media at the official handing over of the sponsorship, held on Tuesday, 04th November at MCA's roof top board room.

Tissa Madigasekera, Vice President standing in for MCA's indesposed President, Tyronne de Silva, received the sponsorship package from Director Marketing of Ceylon Cold Stores, Laksiri Wickramage.

CCS, Special events Manager, Nalin Jayasuriya handed over the brand new "Elephant Lemonade" trophies to MCA's Secretary, Mahesh Wijewardene.

Also present were, CCS, Asst. Manager Special Events, Mithree Withanage and MCA's Chairman Tournament Committee, Ishak Sahabdeen.

Weather permitting, the 14 tams packed with young talent, beaming with confidence are sure to serve some sparkling cricket, as MCA pads up for another grublling season (2004).
