Trade Unions express support for President's move

by Chamikara Weerasinghe

The Federation of Joint Trade Unions with representatives and leaders from twenty nine leading trade unions, yesterday expressed their solidarity with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's decision to take over three Ministries.

Union leaders made this declaration to Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse at his office yesterday evening, and promised their full support to carry on with the President's decision. They agreed to draft a statement on their cooperation to President, to be handed over today to Mahinda Rajapakse. Rajapakse said that there would be no stepping back from the action already in place. He said that the decision was taken in order to revive the country's national security which was seemingly waning on the face of peace talks.

He said, "the peace talks should continue, so should national security."
