Police officers should be impartial in performing duties - Chairman - NPC

by A. W. Gunawardhana, Matara Central Correspondent

Respect towards Police though temporarily diminished it could be regained and rebuilt, only the Police officers could be dressed in Police costumes, they must perform their duties impartially if not they disrespect their own uniforms said, the President of the National Police Commission (NPC) Ranjith Abeysooriya when he addressed an audience consisting of Divisional Secretaries, Police Officers, State Officers, Members of the legal profession, and media-personnel gathered at the auditorium of the District Secretariat-Matara.

In delivering his address from the chair, he further said, Police officers should not be afraid of anyone.

There are plenty of vacancies in the Police force - all such vacancies will be filled before 31st of December this year.

Such vacancies will be filled without calling for applications.

Proficiency, efficiency and seniority will be considered when promotions are given. In terms of section 155 - (1) & 155 (2) of the Constitution appointments, promotions, conduct of disciplinary inquiries and transfers will be done by NPC.

Creation of Police Commission will bring about a close connection between the Police force and the general public. Everybody has a right to complain to the Commission against police officers, when aggrieved over their performances.

Members of the general public will not be satisfied with enquiries held against a police officer by his immediate superior. There are deficiencies in the existing laws such instances must be eliminated. Expedition of arrest of criminals and settlement of criminal cases is a must.

Southern Provincial Deputy Inspector General of Police D. W. Prathapasingha said, members of the Police force are being criticised from all quarters. Members of the general public step into the Police stations with much reluctance, just because they do not have any other alternative. Police officers must listen to all, the complaints may true or not. Biggest problem faced by the police is the arrest of 96% absconding criminals.

Matara district co-ordinating officer of the NPC S. K. Chandrasoma and Additional District Secretary-Matara Gaminie Jayasekara also spoke.
