Samudradevi passengers help schoolchildren

Maharagama special correspondent

'Live and let live' is the worthiest notion of Buddhist philosophy. Donate where it needs. A person who thinks of himself only will get the prosperity in this world. But the person who think of others and help them to live will achieve the prosperity as well as in the other world.

Ven. Panditha Badanagala Chandawimala Thera made this statement delivering an Anusasana at the ceremony organised by the 'Help others' Union of the Samudradevi railway Passengers to distribute books, stationery and sports equipment for the children of Mahagammedda Vidyalaya, Kalutara overlooked by the government and donors.

Further delivering the Anusasanawa Ven. Chandawimala Thera added. Dana means giving something to who needs it. The real Dana is giving something to whom it needs without anticipating anything in return. Politicians give Dana anticipating votes in return. Some donate for the sake of honour and fame.

Worthy donors go in search of the place where the help needs and donate. Likewise The Society had done great service by giving books, stationery and sports equipment for the students of this poor school which was overlooked by the Government and donors. This is a great example for other donors. Giving books means giving knowledge. Giving sports goods mean giving health and energy to the people. Citizens with education and energy will one day lead the country and the nation toward the prosperity.

P.J.S. de Silva, the Principal of the school speaking on this occasion said that the urban favourite schools are equipped with full of resources while children in remote schools do not get a single ball to play. Poor rural schools are overlooked by all.

This organisation came in search of us and donated books, stationery and sports goods worth to Rs. 50,000 without any appeal. Most of the organisations are meant to serve the people of a certain village or locality.

But this 'Help Others' Union of Samudradevi railway Passengers is a peculiar society.

The regular passengers of Samudradevi train are the members of the union. They had come to help our poor children without any hesitation. We thank them for coming forward to perform meritorious deeds such as this and we highly value their great act. A student in the Grade Nine proposed the vote of thanks.

Dharmadasa Siriwardana, the Chief organiser, Premaratne Senapath (JP) the Chairman, Mahinda Alagiyawadu, Treasurer also spoke.
