The Colombo Port has gained momentum among the international shipping lines with her potential to start 13 shipping services through the Port of Colombo within a period of 20 months, said Dr. Parakrama Dissanayaka, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority. Dr. Dissanayaka said so at a plaque exchange ceremony held yesterday to welcome the first vessel "Merkur Bay" owned by Lloyd Triestino. Chairman, Dr. Parakrama Dissanayaka and Captain of the vessel Capt. Oliver Hapbogal exchanges the plaques, states a Port Development and Shipping Ministry press release. Dr. Dissanayaka said that on instructions of Rauff Hakeem, Minister of Port Development and Shipping a series of steps had been taken to improve the Colombo Port efficiency and as a result, the operational capacity of the Port has markedly increased enabling to commence 13 shipping services within 20 months. Steps are afoot to increase the operational capacity of the Jaya Container Terminal and Unity Container terminal by 50% in the near future, Dr. Dissanayaka added. The new shipping service (ADR service) of the Lloyd Triestino" in partnership with CMA-CGM has assigned "Merkur Bay" for the maiden voyage across China, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong through Port of Colombo to Italy, Yogoslavia and Europe. Captain Gamini Nanayakkara Managing Director of the Triestino Lanka Shipping Ltd, the local agents of the new shipping service, Captain A. V. Rajendra, Triestino Lanka Shipping Ltd, the Chief Operations Manager of Sri Lanka Ports Authority U. Bopitiya, Habour Master Capt. Nihal Keppetipola and several others were also present at the occasion. |
