The LTTE has decided to extend its cooperation to the Coconut Cultivation Board's project of cultivating 5000 acres of coconut land in the Mullaitivu and Killinochchi districts, stated a media release by the Plantation Industries Ministry, yesterday. This was disclosed when the Coconut Board Chairman Lincoln Fernando attended a meeting at the Economic Headquarters of the LTTE at Killinochchi to organise the coconut cultivation project designed to rehabilitate 18000 acres of coconut land in the North East that were devastated due to the war. Prior to the war, 35000 acres of land in the Eastern Province were under coconut cultivation. Under the new project of rehabilitation, the Government expects to bring 2000 acres of land per year under coconut cultivation in the North and East extending over a period of 10 years. The Coconut Cultivation Board within the next few months will secure 100000 coconut plants for the Jaffna District and 70000 plants for the Trincomalie District with a subsidy of Rs. 16,000.00 per acre in addition to a subsidy of Rs. 5000.00 per one ton of fertiliser. A Coconut Cultivation Board office has been set up in Jaffna to implement this project. |
