Probe into bus repairing fraud at Werahera

by Rajmi Manatunga

The Transport Ministry has ordered an immediate investigation into a massive fraud regarding the repair of CTB buses by the Werahera workshop attached to the CTB.

A spokesman for the Ministry told the Daily News yesterday that the inquiry was ordered following reports of the disappearance of over 100 CTB buses after being sent for repairs at the Werahera and Keppetipola workshops.

"Around six months back the CTB had sent 148 of its buses that were temporarily out of operation to these workshops to be repaired. However, according to CTB authorities only 10 of these buses have been returned by the workshops. We suspect a massive fraud behind the disappearance of buses," he said.

He said that Transport Minister Tilak Marapana has directed ministry officials to investigate into the incident and examine whether the workshop had acted in terms of the agreement signed with the CTB.

"The CTB has informed the Minister that those responsible for the fraud have not yet been identified," the spokesman said.
