Nepal's king pleads for peace, unity KATHMANDU, Sunday (Reuters) Nepal's King Gyanendra, who is facing a bloody Maoist rebellion and dissent from political parties, appealed for peace and unity on Sunday, the anniversary of the end of absolute monarchy in 1990. "It is imperative that an environment of peace, security and good governance prevails," the 56-year king said in a Constitution Day speech. In his Constitution Day address, the king urged political parties to unite and work together "to relieve the country of the prevailing uneasy situation". Nepali state radio said 141 inmates were released from jail on Sunday to mark Constitution Day but it was not clear if any Maoist rebels were among those set free. |
