Chandrika wins triple crown

Top seed Niluka Karunaratne retained the men's singles title for the third successive year while Chandrika de Silva completed a triple crown at the 51st senior national badminton championships concluded at the Royal College Sports Complex, Reid Avenue yesterday.

Niluka Karunaratne had the honour of overcoming the former national champion and the more experienced Thushara Edirisinghe in straight sets 15-10, 15-13 in the final. In the women's singles final Chandrika de Silva completely outplayed Thilini Jayasinghe 11-8, 11-3.

This was in fact the seventh time that Chandrika de Silva had clinched the women's singles title and she equalled the Sri Lanka record held by Chandrika Mallawarachchi. She also went on to win a triple crown having earlier taken the women's doubles title and the mixed doubles title. C.D
