Mazahim - Ukuwela Special Correspondent The Matale Municipal Council was selected as the best council for the year 2002. The competition was held among the Municipal Councils in the Central Province. They are Matale, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya. This competition was organized by the Ministry of Local Government in the Central Province. The award presentation ceremony was held at the D.S. Senanayake Hall, Kandy recently. The chief guest for the occasion was Chief Minister of the Central Province Wasantha Aluvihare. The organizers of the competition looked in to all the aspects of running the Council, keeping the city clean, environment, solid waste management and library service. For the last two years, the Matale Municipal Council was elected as the first among the three Municipals in the Central Province. At the moment, the Matale Municipal Council is working with JICA for Sanitary Land Filling and with UN Habitat and the UNDP on sustainable city programme, and with the SLIEDA on the greening city programme, and doing a low-income housing project with ADB assistance. At the Asia Pacific Environment Summit, which was held in Honolulu, Hawaii last month, the Mayor of Matale Mohamed Hilmy Careem had made a commitment to make Matale a clean, green and healthy city. His theme for the next year is to make Matale a clean and a green city. "We were able to achieve this with the support of the commissioner, all the heads of departments, all officers and without any party differences by working as a team. |
