'Children must be encouraged to save' by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen Parents and teachers should encourage children to save and be thrifty from the young days which will in turn help them to be steady in their later life and prevent them being extravagant, said the Minister of Education, Industries, Mines and Mineral Development, Social Services and Rehabilitation, Estate Infrastructure Facilities and Animal Husbandry Affairs of the Central Provincial Council V. Radhakrishnan. He made these observations when he opened a 'Sisu Udanaya' branch of the Peoples Bank at Peradeniya Central College in Peradeniya. Provincial Minister Radhakrishan said if the schoolchildren save, it will be a good financial security for their future. They could make use of this money during times of need. The facilities afforded by this bank are many, they could take loans after they reach 18 years to further their studies. These loans could be up to a maximum of 150,000. The banks are often reluctant to give loans unless they have adequate security as people are either reluctant to repay them or slow in their repayment. This must be avoided and if the people take loans they must take steps to settle them on time. This is a lesson schoolchildren should learn from their youngages. If schoolchildren learn these important aspects of life, they will be better citizens and will be successful in their life. Banks are there to help people and the people must reciprocate. Also present on this occasion were S. M. Gamage (Assistant General Manager, Peoples Bank Central Province), Provincial Director of Education (CP) W. D. Wickramasinghe, Principal of Peradeniya Central College S. Suriaarachchi. |
