Officials urged to expedite Deepaloka rural power projects by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Correspondent Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake urged the officials of the Ceylon Electricity Board to expedite the completion of the projects under the Deepaloka Rural Electrification programme funded by the Asian Development Bank. He emphasised that they must be completed before April, 2004. He made these observations at a discussion he had with the officials of the Ceylon Electricity Board at the auditorium of the Ministry of Central Region Development at Getambe in Kandy. Minister Attanayake said that if there was any problem it should be brought to the notice of the relevant authorities without any delay, and no time should be wasted as they will look into ways to resolve those problems. The officials of the CEB brought to the notice of Minister Attanayake that the number of registered contractors with the CEB was not sufficient to cope with the demand of the projects and also they encountered many problems in cutting trees and branches in drawing the overhead wires. Minister Attanayake replied that the CEB should take immediate steps to increase the number of registered contractors to meet with the demands of the Deepaloka Rural Electrification Scheme. They also should liaise with the Divisional Secretaries of the respective areas when cutting trees, so that haphazard and unnecessary logging of trees could be avoided. The Minister said that under the programme, it had been proposed to complete 17 projects in the Kandy district, 18 projects in Matale district, 54 projects in the Anuradhapura district, 19 projects in the Polonnaruwa district, 43 projects in the Badulla district, 19 projects in the Nuwara Eliya District. Action will also be taken to provide electricity to areas not covered under the programme but where these high tension wires pass the areas by installing transformers. Also present at this discussion were H. S. Soysa, Deputy General Manager CEB (Central), P. A. D. Caldera (Deputy GM Commercial CEB), and many others. |
