Sirisena Herath is new DIG Colombo

Crimes, Crimes Intelligence, Children and Women Bureau Deputy Inspector General of Police, Herath Mudiyanselage Sirisena Herath has been appointed DIG Colombo with immediate effect.

DIG Herath succeeds Colombo Senior DIG Bodhi Liyanage who will assume duties as Senior DIG Central Range.

DIG Herath joined the Police Force as an Assistant Superintendent of Police on August 1, 1974 and served in Avissawella, Trincomalee, Ratnapura and Matara.

He was promoted SP in August 1983. On January 1, 1989, Herath was promoted Senior SP and served in Ratnapura till May 25, 1992.

Considering the leadership held against subversive activities during that period, he was given three special increments in addition to the promotion.

In July 13, 1993 he was promoted Deputy Inspector General of Police.

DIG Herath had also served in various parts of the country including Northern Range based in Jaffna, Vavuniya, North Western Range, Central Range and in Colombo from April 20, 1998 to December 7, 2000. DIG Herath was the first officer sent to take charge as DIG Northern Range during 'Operation Riviresa' in 1995. During the period DIG Herath served as DIG North Western Range, he was responsible for the arrest and detection of a hard drug dealer with 1100 kgs of hashis considered to be the largest haul. A large haul of LTTE weapons were also recovered which were to be used to attack the Jayasiri Maha Bodhi. Sarvodaya Movement leader Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne awarded the Janatha Sammanaya on DIG Herath on December 26, 2002 for the exemplary service in the Police Department while the Association of the All Island Justices of the Peace awarded him the Purawesi Award for combating narcotic trade.DIG Herath had followed special courses and training overseas including Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, India, Australia and USA. He was president of the Life Saving Association of Sri Lanka.
