Peace process will continue - PM

by Ananda Kannangara

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on his arrival from United States yesterday reassured that regardless of political developments, the peace process initiated by his Government will be continued without any interruption with the support of the international community. He said his Government is confident that a permanent solution to this problem could be achieved with the support of all major countries.

Addressing a large number of people waiting in and outside the BIA, Katunayake to welcome the Prime Minister and his party, Wickremesinghe said that Parliament must be re-summoned immediately to discuss matters related to the peace process, the budget and also to take various other important decisions.

He said the Government has the majority in Parliament and it is the only place to expose views on matters pertaining to current developments.

The Premier also stressed that the US Government under the leadership of President George W Bush and the US Congress have fully extended their fullest support to the peace process.

"At this crucial moment when the LTTE is ready to discuss with the Government the counter proposals on the Interim Administration, we must not move away from the discussions for the sake of peace loving people in the country," he said.

He said the Government also expects to talk with India and four donor countries including Norway on the peace process and also matters related to development activities.

"The people gave us a clear mandate to form a Government in December 2001 with the objective of creating a country with a peaceful atmosphere," he said. He said during these two years the Government generated numerous development projects and improved the economy while having a permanent ceasefire with the LTTE.

"People know that the budget will be presented to Parliament this month and we have to discuss the salary increase for public servants and relief granted to farmers to uplift agriculture. The International Monitory Fund and the World Bank too have pledged to grant loans for future development schemes," the Prime Minister said.
