Ravi Shankar tries to reduce stress in Mideast JERUSALEM, Monday (AFP) The sitar-playing Indian spiritual leader Ravi Shankar is to employ his unique brand of stress reduction techniques in a bid to ease tensions in the Middle East. Shankar, a one-time friend of the Beatles, was due to meet Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and President Moshe Katzan during a trip between November 4 and 7 which will also feature educational workshops held under the auspices of the Education for Life Foundation. The organisation's founder, Italian-born Israeli Daniel Kropf, said it was hoped that the visit would foster mutual respect between the Palestinians and Israelis. "We are honored that Sri (Shankar) ... will visit Israel to impart our shared values of mutual respect, caring and responsibility for ones own life," he said in a statement. "Sris techniques, which work to relieve stress and trauma and allow people to take control of their lives is the very essence of what Education for Life is trying to impart to the children of this region, which has seen an almost unprecedented amount of violence over a sustained period of time." Shankar is also expected to hold similar workshops for Palestinians in the West Bank town of Ramallah before arriving in Israel. |
