Indonesian flood kills 67, five tourists JAKARTA, Monday (Reuters) At least 67 people, including five foreign tourists, were killed when torrential rains caused flash flooding on Indonesia's Sumatra island on Monday, a government official said. The rains, which began on Sunday night, caused flooding near the North Sumatra capital of Medan northwest of Jakarta. There was no immediate word on the nationalities of the foreigners. "We received information....that 67 people have died," Edi Sofya, North Sumatra province spokesman, told Reuters by telephone from Medan. "Of that total so far, 32 are Indonesian and five are foreigners," he said. He said the flooding hit the area of Bahorok, popular with tourists, early on Monday. Indonesia's rainy season usually starts in November and lasts until April. |
