Maoist rebels ambush army patrol, 10 killed

KATHMANDU, Monday (Reuters) Ten Nepalese soldiers were killed and six wounded when Maoist rebels fighting the country's constitutional monarchy ambushed an army patrol on Sunday, a defence official said.

The defence official said a crude bomb exploded under an army vehicle carrying 18 soldiers on a regular patrol at Jitpur, 200 km (125 miles) south of the capital Kathmandu.

Meanwhile Suspected Maoist rebels looted the equivalent of nearly 700,000 dollars from a bank in the heart of Nepal's capital, police said Monday.

Employees of the state-run National Commerce Bank realized only late Sunday that the branch in the Bishalbazar commercial area had been robbed when it was closed over the weekend, police said.

"The robbers, who we suspect are Maoists, broke the lock on the bank. We estimate they took around 50 million rupees (about 680,400 dollars)," a senior police officer told AFP.
