Rupavahini volleyball finals on November 16

The finals of the 22nd Rupavahini Volleyball tournament organised by the National Youth Services Council and Rupavahini Corporation will be worked off on November 16 at 5.30 pm at the Municipal Council grounds, Gampaha.

It is the biggest volleyball tournament conducted in Sri Lanka. It was held in three stages in Provincial Secretariat Division, District Level and National Level nearly 4,000 men's and women's spikers are participating in this major tournament.

30 men's teams and 27 women's teams took part in the National Competition which was held last month at Gampaha Municipal Council grounds.

From the women's division Colombo district united team and the Sri Lanka Navy qualified for the finals and from the men's division Siyane Tharu and the Air Force team have qualified for the finals.

The 3rd place from the women's division was secured by Henagama Yamaha Team. Sri Lanka Navy and Police teams will clash for the men's 3rd place play off which will be held on November 16 at 3.30 pm at the Municipal grounds, Gampaha.

The women's final will be held at 5 pm and the men's final will be held at 7 pm.

The cash prizes for the winners have been increased this year. The champions will get Rs. 100,000 and Rs. 50,000 for the second and Rs. 25,000 for the 3rd place in the men's competition. It is Rs. 50,000, Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 12,500 for the women's winners. The best player selected from every position of the competing teams will be awarded trophies.

The Rupavahini Corporation will telecast live the finals and the awards presentation ceremony from 5 pm to 8 pm.

The chief guests for the occasion are the Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya, Minister of Mass Communications Imthiaz Bakeer Markar and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando. The Chairman of the Rupavahini Corporation Professor Dhammika Ganganath Dissanayake and the Chairman and Director General of the National Youth Services Council Sunil Jayaweera will also grace the occasion. The tournament is being sponsored by CIC Fertilizer Company.
