Italian referee promotes soccer in Northern Province

An Italian football referee residing in Sri Lanka Gabriele Mery is playing a major role in promoting soccer in the Northern Province.

With the blessings of the Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena he has already conducted coaching camps in Killinochchi for boys and girls who were taught basic skills like ball control, passing, kicking the ball and feints.

He hopes to form boys and girls soccer teams from the Northern Province to play against teams from the South to bring about friendship and understanding between the two main communities which would help in the peace process initiated by the present government.

The coaching programme under the theme 'Games for Peace' is receiving the maximum support from Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena who is confident that interaction between the sportsmen and women from the two main communities will bring about lasting friendship and ethnic harmony.
