Colombo wins Emirates Sales Achievement award

More people flew Emirates out of Colombo in 2002-03, enabling the award-winning airline's Colombo office to win the region's 'Sales Achievement of the Year award.

The award, presented at the annual global commercial conference of Emirates in Dubai in October, recognises growth in passenger sales revenue driven by the airline's consistent focus on customer service.

It was received on behalf of the station by Devika Ellepola, Emirates' Sales Manager Colombo, from Keith Longstaff, Senior Vice President Commercial Operations - West Asia & Pacific Rim (WAPR) at Emirates.

In the year reviewed for the award, Emirates Colombo's revenue from passenger sales exceeded its target by 38.4 per cent, despite intense competition on many of the routes the airline operates. Revenue for the financial year 2002-03 grew by a healthy 488.3 per cent over the previous year, with consistent growth in all classes of travel.

Emirates Area Manager Sri Lanka and the Maldives Tissa Bibile said that "Clearly, customer preference was the key factor in helping us win this award. Colombo's achievement is particularly significant in the context of the competition we face from lower priced carriers.

It is a testimonial to the strength of the Emirates product and the commitment of the sales team."

The Emirates Group also declared a 74 per cent increase in net profits to Dhs1.05 billion (US$ 285.7 million) for the financial year 2002/3, ended March 31, 2003. Emirates Airline's operations alone achieved a staggering 94 per cent increase in profits, from Dhs468.2 million (US$ 127.6m) to Dhs906.7 million (US$ 247.1m), placing Emirates in the top five most profitable airlines in the world.

In Colombo, Emirates is the most active foreign carrier, and connects Sri Lanka to its rapidly growing global network through 13 weekly services westward to Dubai and four services a week eastward to Singapore and Jakarta.
