Balagalle Defence Staff chief Lieutenant General Lionel Balagalle will assume duties today as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). Lt. Gen Balagalle is the first serving Army Commander in the country to hold this office, a Defence Ministry release said yesterday. As CDS, he will Head the Joint Operations Headquarters the unified apparats of Army, Navy, Air Force and Police that co-ordinates all operational activities of the Security Forces. The post has remained vacant since June 2002. A tri service guard of honour followed by religious ceremonies will mark the assumption of office. He was appointed to the post of CDS on October 10, Army Day. Lieutenant General Balagalle, joined the Army as an Officer Cadet on April 5, 1965. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant and posted to the 4th Regiment, Sri Lanka Artillery on April 5, 1967. He had held many key appointments in operational areas. Among them are General Officer Commanding (GOC), 51 Division (Jaffna), Commander, Security Forces (Jaffna) and Commander, Security Forces (Wanni). Successful counter terrorist operations have been conducted under his command, the release said. |
