Opportunistic politicians trying to make use of university students - Minister Attanayake

by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Correspondent

Budgetary allocations for education will never be slashed and the funds allocated will be spent for improving the education system and infrastructure. So the schoolchildren and University students should make the best use of the facilities provided, said Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake.

He made these observations when he laid the foundation stones for the construction of three buildings in the Matale district. He laid the foundation stones for the construction of a Science Laboratory and library at Kaikawela Vidyalaya, Kaikawela.

These two projects will cost Rs. 3.5 million. He also laid the foundation those for the construction of a library building at a cost of Rs. 700,000 to Ajmir Muslim Vidyalaya, Warakamura in Matale.

Minister Tissa Attanayake said that it is the responsibility of the government to provide education for all irrespective of the race, caste or religion. Education has no division or distinction and this is an inalienable right of every Sri Lankan. He said that today it is a matter to regret that undergraduates are resorting to various actions and demonstrations which hampers their studies and even causes damage to property.

Every Varsity student should bear in mind that the main objective of entering the University is to complete their studies as quickly as possible and enter the society as useful citizens so that they will be an asset to the country and do justice to themselves. They should not be a pawn in the hands of opportunistic politicians who would like to use the University students to achieve their own selfish ends.

Minister Tissa Attanayake said that today parents are clamouring to admit their children to the popular schools. This government has drawn up a plan to provide all schools with the necessary facilities, so that a child could go to a school closer to his or her home.

When you look at the standard of education which is imparted at present, it is limited to books and with employment as the main objective. This is one of the reasons for unemployment. Education must be job oriented and should meet the demands of the employment market and it is only then that they will be able to find lucrative employment.

Minister Tissa Attanayake wound up stating today Educational reforms both in schools and in the universities have been made, so that they will meet the demands of the employment market. When we are trying to implement these changes, some bankrupt politicians are trying to make use of the students to stage demonstrations, strickes etc to scuttle these reforms. In fact the expectations of these politicians is not to find solutions to problems but make everything remains at a standstill. Do not be misled by these politicians and think of your own future and make the best use of what is offered to you.

Also present on this occasion were Matale District UNP MP Sanjeewa Kaviratne, Central Province Provincial Councillor Rohana Bandaranayake and Zonal Director of Education - Matale - A. Muthubanda and many others.
