Seminar on herbal plants

A seminar was conducted for schoolchildren in the Kandy District, by HelpAge Sri Lanka co-ordinated by the Kandy Buddhist Association to mark "National Tree Planting Day" in the Sri Natha Dewala Daham Pasal Hall, Kandy, recently.

The objective of the programme is to instill an awareness in the youth, especially the schoolchildren at a very early age of the importance of conserving the fauna and flora of the country.

The topic of discussion centered mainly on the propagation of herbal plants, the protection and the conservation of valuable and rare medicinal plants that are presently threatened with extinction.

Three hundred school children from 21 schools in the district participate at the seminar and nearly 1,000 plants of 40 different species inclusive of Arulu, Bulu, Nelli, Kohomba, Binkohomba, Rasakinda, and Tippili were distributed to be planted in the school gardens and places accessible to the children, where the progress could be monitored by them.

Hotel owner shot dead

M. J. M. Palitha (40), a father of four, an owner of a hotel on Kelaniya Vihara Mawatha was shot dead by a gang of unidentified men who came in a car near his ancestral house at Gonawala last Friday (24) night. Three persons were also injured and admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

The cause of the murder is not known.

This was revealed at the inquest held by the Colombo Additional Magistrate Mrs. L. Liyanarachchi.

Palitha's friend R. D. S. Siri Kumara (37) and several others gave evidence. Dr. Ajith Jayasena, AJMO, Colombo National Hospital held the autopsy. No arrests have been made. A verdict of murder was returned. Kelaniya police led evidence.

London examinations GK quiz

The Edexcel International Country Office will be conducting a Multi Media General Knowledge Quiz on October 31 at the BMICH.

The quiz will consist of preliminary, semifinal and final rounds. The winning team will carry away the London Exams GK Quiz trophy. The semifinalists and the finalists will be awarded book vouchers for their school libraries.

London Examinations have been offered since 1838, and they have been available internationally for many years. Currently, schools and colleges in over 105 countries take London Examinations as their preferred choice. The quiz master will be Viran Corea.

'Govt. Service and the public'

The joint free media coalition will hold a workshop on 'government service and the public', on October 27 from 9 am to 3.00 pm at the Russian Cultural Centre, Colombo.

The workshop, organised for public servants, will discuss relevant issues including violation of human rights, environmental protection and the utilization of investment for public good. Several lectures on the role of public servants in various fields will also be delivered by several eminent speakers. Around 150 public servants are expected to attend the workshop.
