Gampaha South Group Correspondent

'Nena Nuwana', the educational scholarship programme of the Ministry of Samurdhi held its scholarship awarding ceremony at the Gampaha Bandaranayake Maha Vidyalaya under the patronage of the Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya.

Four hundred selected students from Samurdhi beneficiary families in the Western Province were awarded scholarships.

Minster of Samurdhi Affairs R. A. D. Sirisena, Minister of Indigenous Medicine Sarathchandra Rajakaruna, Director General of Samurdhi Dr. Kumari Nawarathna and Gampaha District Secretary V. K. Ruparathna participated.

Minister Karu Jayasuriya said 'Samurdhi' is not a political movement. It is a national movement mainly based to uplift the living standards of the destitute and poorest class in the country. The successful community development programme of the movement has guided and encouraged beneficiary families to get involved in self-employment activities. The banking system of this movement is very popular among the beneficiary families.

The 'Nena Nuwana' scholarship scheme is being implemented for the well-being of the talented students in 'Samurdhi' beneficiary families.

While commenting on the prevailing education service, the Minister called upon the scholarship recipients to further their education together with the morality, and to render valuable services for the betterment of the country.

Minister of Samurdhi Affairs R. A. D. Sirisena said, "the duty of government servants is to render their service impartially and to pay more attention on the matters pertaining to ordinary man.

Discipline and punctuality must be the hallmark of public sector institutions.

Director General of 'Samurdhi' Dr. Kumari Nawarathna said the 'Nena Nuwana' scholarship programme organised under the instruction of the Minister S. B. Dissanayaka has been able to award 11,000 scholarships.
