by Rajmi Manatunga The Transport Ministry is exploring the possibility of setting up a railway system commencing from the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). State Transport Minister Piyasoma Upali said that studies were being carried out on the feasibility of establishing a railway network linking the BIA with the country's major cities and tourist attractions. Several developed countries have their rail system linked to airports. "In most countries where tourism is a main foreign exchange earner, train services are available from the airport itself. This is not the case in Sri Lanka where modes of passenger transport from the airport is inadequate. There is no train service or a reliable bus service for tourists arriving in the country," he said. Meanwhile, the Ministry has also decided to repair railway tracks to provide a safer ride. Under the first phase of the programme, repair work will be initiated on the track within 50 miles from Colombo following which the programme will be expanded to other areas. Derelict rail tracks have become a major cause of train accidents. The problem has compelled railway authorities to impose speed limits which has resulted in constant delays in train operations. |
