Rural areas could be developed through expansion of tourism - Minister Jayawickrema Perera

by Richmond Wijesekera, Bentota group corre.

The farmers in the Bentota, Induruwa and Pahalagamhaya areas gave a rousing welcome to the Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Gamini Jayawickrema Perera during his tour of the Bentara-Elpitiya electorate recently.

The Minister visited Bentara-Elpitiya to look into problems faced by the farmers on the invitation of Galle District MP Gayantha Karunatilake.

The farmers appreciated the Minister's visit to Bentara-Elpitiya to look into their grievances. They also placed their confidence to the Government's initiative to develop agriculture and irrigation projects. The Minister was welcomed by Galle District MP Gayantha Karunatilake at a ceremony held at Pahurumulla, Bentota.

Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera said that he is not a stranger to this electorate having visited it several times when Rupa Karunatilake was the Minister of Plantation Industries. Minister Perera said that rural areas could be developed only through the expansion of tourism and also by making available the modern technologies at village level.

The resources of the country should be fully harnessed to obtain maximum yields. Till recent times, banks adopted the method of earning money out of money, the present government changed that policy by reducing the rate of interest from 24 to 8 per cent.

Galle District MP Gayantha Karunatilake said the Government's aim is to uplift the living standards of the people by ushering in peace and prosperity to the country.

The policies followed by the Government have helped all communities in the country to live in peace and harmony.

He said, it was the duty of the people to shun all differences and extend their fullest co-operation to the Government to complete the massive development projects for the benefit of the country.
