Peace process showing fruitful results - PM

From Ananda Kannangara in Katuwana, Hambantota

The peace process is showing fruitful results and the government is awaiting the LTTE proposals, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.

"We have completed a major economic programme to develop the whole country and under this plan, major problems faced by people could be solved to a great extent," Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said.

The Prime Minister was answering questions raised by villagers during a tour of Katuwana and Weeraketiya in Mulkirigala.

He reminded the people about the steps taken by the Government to meet their demands and said the Government could now fulfil all their requirements with the peaceful atmosphere in the country.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe also said the Fiscal Bill Responsibility will soon be discussed in the Cabinet and put forward before Parliament. "Once this Bill is approved by Parliament, the difference between income and expenditure can be reduced every year to a greater extent," the Prime Minister said.

He emphasised that all this is possible due to the ceasefire. The Prime Minister also focused his attention on the construction of a harbour and an airport in the district. Southern Development Minister Ananda Kularatne said according to a feasibility report the Government is expected to spend US $ 70 million for the airport and US $ 1,700 million for the harbour.

The Prime Minister replied the questions posed by villagers, mainly related to providing water for their agricultural activities, construction of roads and educational problems in several schools.
