Balangoda and Mahawewa clinch Deaf Schools Volleyball titles

The Deaf Schools Volleyball tournament 2003 was played recently at the school for the Deaf Grounds, Ratmalana, organised by the Deaf School Past Pupils Association. The School for the Deaf, Ratmalana and partnered by Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited for the second successive year. The fifteen teams from eight Deaf Schools in Sri Lanka with eight boys' teams and seven girls' teams battled it out for the Caltex Trophies.

The boys and girls finals were played after the arrival of the chief guest Anura Perera Director/General Manager Finance and Vajira Abeysinghe, Head of Sales and Marketing, as the guest of honour both from Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited.

The boys' final game that was closely fought, however it was the team from Yasodara Deaf and Blind School, Balangoda to win the Caltex Trophy in 3 sets 25/11, 25/20 and 25/17 against Islamic Centre for the Physically Handicapped, Thihariya. H.R. Lasantha Randimal (captain) from Yasodara Deaf and Blind School, Balangoda was the best player for his brilliant performance. In girls' final game Sivaraja Deaf and Blind School, Mahawewa and The School for the Deaf Tangalle played but it was the former that played with greater conviction and skill and emerged victorious with 25/12, 25/7 and 25/11. The best player was Sigithi Esaka Fernando captain from Siviraja Deaf and Blind School, Mahawewa.

Speaking at the awards ceremony Anura Perera said that Caltex as socially' responsible organisation was proud to be associated with the Past pupils' Association. The School for the Deaf, Ratmalana in promoting sports among the Deaf School Children.

Caltex would like to assist and support the Deaf and Blind Schools in Sri Lanka as well. President and Chairman of the Organising Committee Shivantha Vivekanandan said that it is important of all the Deaf Schools in the country unite and make use of this opportunity created by Caltex. He thanked his Committee, the Management of the Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited, the other sponsors, the well -wishers and the Principals of the various Deaf Schools for making this event a success.
