India’s Chief of the Southern Army Command, Lt. Gen. G. S. Sihota receives a memento from Sri Lanka’s Army Chief Lt. Gen. Lionel Balagalle at the Army Headquarters in Colombo yesterday. Sihota is on a goodwill visit amid increased military cooperation between the two South Asian neighbours as announced during a recent visit to New Delhi by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.


Early finalisation for defence, economic pacts

India and Sri Lanka will begin "negotiations at the earliest" for the Indo-Lanka Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and the defence agreement, which were announced during Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's two-day visit to India.

Azwer calls for President's intervention; President evokes July '83

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga replying the letter sent to her by Parliamentary Affairs Minister A.H.M.Azwer calling for her intervention to halt the PA's agitation campaign which falls on Deepavali day states that she had already informed the organisers of the event to maintain the strictest discipline at all times and that the event must in no way inconvenience those who will celebrate Deepavali and other members of the public.
