Royal - Thomian hockey clash on Friday by Richard Dwight Any annual encounter on the field of sport between traditional rivals the 'Blues', has always evoked much interest drawing many to it. This is mainly because it is keenly contested in the best of spirit with much goodwill, bonhomie and camaraderie prevailing - which we are certain will be in evidence when the stickers from Royal and S. Thomas' pit their might against each other this Friday October 24 at 4.00 p.m. on the Astro Turf grounds, Reid Avenue, Colombo. Since the inauguration of this healthy tussle for the Orville Abeynaike Trophy in 1999, S. Thomas' has consecutively won the trophy for the past three years. In this the fourth annual encounter, the Thomians will strive hard to have the satisfaction of retaining the trophy, whilst the Royalists will try to prevent this by winning it, to bridge the gap. The Thomian team is led by Tivanka Wijeratne, with Daniel Edirisinghe as Senior Coach and Thusitha Wickremasinghe as Master-in-charge. Rohan Mallikarachchi leads Royal, with Rohan Dissanayake as Coach and Sudath Liyanagunawardene as Master-in-charge. Commencing this year, there will also be an additional hockey match between the old boys of the two colleges. |
