While appreciating the Minister's concern for the sentiments of the Hindu community the President regretted that he did not "exhibit the same concern in July 1983, when the previous UNP Government killed thousands of innocent Hindus and other Tamil civilians and destroyed the property of very many more in an orgy of violence". "Accordingly, I recommend that your humanitarian concern be exercised to impress upon the present Prime Minister and the Cabinet to pay compensation to the victims of the July 1983 holocaust, as recommended by the Presidential Truth Commission on Ethnic Violence appointed by me on 23rd July 2001." |
