Pay hike for Govt servants

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told the Cabinet meeting last evening that the Government, in keeping with its targeted pay hike, will take steps to substantially increase the salaries of government servants by the next budget.

Replying to a question by the President whether the target could be achieved, the Prime Minister said that the Government is nearing its target.

Finance Minister K. N. Choksy endorsed the Prime Minister's view.

Youth nabbed with ganja inside Court

A youth who tried to pass three packets of ganja to a remand prisoner inside the Mount Lavinia Courts was taken into custody by Police yesterday.

The suspect had three packets containing 10g and 470mg of ganja in the Court complex where his friend, an inmate had to appear before the Magistrate. A police officer had searched the suspect and found packets inside an envelope. Mount Lavinia Police are investigating.
