Hope for Charity steps into 10th year

Hope for Children, the British Charity which is now working in Sri Lanka steps into the tenth year. The charity was established on 5th October 1994 in the Year of the Family and to coincide with Universal Children's Week. The Sri Lanka programme got off the ground in January 1995.

According to the annual review for the year 2002/2003 which has just been released the charity works in thirty countries in Europe, Africa and Asia.

In terms of resource allocation and the number of projects Sri Lanka is on top of the list with seventy nine projects and twenty two per cent of resource allocation.

Sri Lanka Representative of Hope for Children Tyrell Cooray based at Moratuwa told the Daily News that Hope's aims and objectives are to assist children who suffer through being handicapped, orphaned, poor and exploited in particular those living in developing countries and this is achieved through providing, protecting and advancing children's rights to basic necessities including education and health care aimed at sustaining their long term development.

He added that in achieving these objectives the focus of the Sri Lanka Programme is on.

The vulnerable child, the child in the slums, the child in the plantations and the internally displaced child. Attention is also focused on early child development.

The charity does not do self implementation of projects but work with partner agencies throughout the island and they number around sixty.

Some of the major projects and activities supported during the year under review are street children's project in Colombo and Matara housing improvement (Gruha Asiri) in low income settlements in Colombo North, sponsorship for providing Jaipur limbs and orthotic appliances for children.

Since April 1996 a total of three hundred and thirteen sponsorships have been provided) improvement of a pre school for disabled children at Tangalle, educational programme for intellectually disabled children at Nuwara Eliya and educational support for destitute children, six income generator activities for women headed families, improvement of the standards in pre schools, orphans support scheme in the North East.

Some of the highlights are the provision of a set of educational play material and a water filter to each of one hundred and thirty three Sarvodaya managed pre schools in and around Kebethigollawa under the Singithi Udawa Project, a gift of a three wheeler for use of the House of Detention, Halpatota, School supplies and material for uniforms for five hundred and forty seven school children affected by the divesting floods in May this year.

The Mobile Service Unit donated in September 2001 to the Colombo Friend in need society funded mainly from the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund has been deployed to date twenty one locations and has served one thousand two hundred and forty six persons. With new prostheses, repairs to prostheses, elbow crutches and arm crutches.
