Network of schools to impart Aesthetic education

Human Resources Development Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku said his Ministry would set up a network of schools necessary to impart Aesthetic Education to students showing a special aptitude in these subjects throughout the country after selecting and grouping them.

The Minister said this when he opened the State Child Art Exhibition 2003 organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs at the National Art Gallery Colombo recently.

Minister Dr. Kodituwakku said that we should identify the latent talents of children in their young age and take effective measures to develop them further in order to facilitate the development of the country. Several Sri Lankan children had beaten their counterparts in other counties and gained honours at several international Child Art Competitions held in recent years.

One major factor which enabled them to make this achievement was the free education system they had inherited. Sri Lanka offered free education to its children from Grade 1 to university level. This is a facility very rare in the outside world.

However it is regrettable that certain children had failed to understand the value and importance of this facility.

That is why Sri Lanka had become the only country in the world which kept most of its universities closed for a major part of the year.

The Minister said in the present world opportunities are abound for a person achieving excellence in any field to earn a livelihood. His Ministry has planned to develop human resources through education and provide employment opportunities to them.

Nearly 600 winning entries selected from an all island paintings competition held with the participation of nearly 23,000 students were on display at this exhibition. Director of Cultural Affairs M. Lakshman Perera was also present on the occasion.
