Remembering Gamini Dissanayake

A ceremony to mark the 9th death anniversary of Minister Gamini Dissanayake will he held opposite the Gamini Dissanayake statue at Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 3, under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, today at 8.30 a.m.

The Premier will place floral tributes and distribute school bags containing school equipment among 150 schoolchildren. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe will also offer pirikara to 25 novice monks. He will also inaugurate the web-site of the Gamini Dissanayake Foundation.

Dissanayake was the Minister of Irrigation, Power and Highways in the J. R. Jayewardene Cabinet in 1977 and later in 1978, held the portfolio of Lands, Land Development and Mahaweli Development during which period he steered the Accelerated Mahaweli Development Project to complete it in six years.

In the Cabinet of the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa, he held the portfolio of Plantation Industries. At the same time he was elected President of the Cricket Control Board of Sri Lanka in 1981 and pioneered the cause of establishing the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation.

At the time of his demise following an LTTE bomb blast in Colombo on October 23, 1994, he was competing the Executive Presidency as the United National Party nominee.
