Jobs for Lankans in Belgian ships by Rashomi Silva The Joint Maritime Committee, a watchdog body in the implementation of the Maritime agreement between the Port Development and the Shipping Ministry and the Government of Belgium yesterday decided to sign an undertaking to enhance employment opportunities for seafaring Sri Lankans in Belgium ships. "During the first round of the meeting, the committee decided to enter into an undertaking in the near future for the mutual recognition of the 'Certificates of Competency' issued to the seafarers of Belgium and Sri Lanka enabling them employment in Belgian flag vessels and Sri Lankan flag vessels," the Ministry said. The Belgium delegation has also offered to explore the possibilities of offering study opportunities in Belgium to Sri Lankan Maritime administration personnel and Ports Authority employees. Possibilities of relaxing visa formalities for Sri Lankan sailors joining Belgium ships were also discussed. The Sri Lankan delegation for the joint Maritime Committee was led by Ministry Secretary Ranjith Maligaspe and the Belgium delegation was led by Michael Joseph, Director General of the Belgium Maritime Transport and Federal Public Service. Port Development and Shipping Ministry entered into an agreement on Monday with the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to increase mutual trading by Maritime transport between the two countries. |
