Low income earning families in urban, rural and plantation areas who are building their own houses will be provided with galvanised steel roofing sheets. This programme under which around 3.7 million of roofing sheets are to be distributed at a cost of about Rs. 2000 million will be funded by Indian Line of Credit to be implemented as a joint Indo-Sri Lanka project.

The roofing sheets will be supplied by the State Trading Corporation of India Ltd. and PEC Ltd., two enterprises in India. As the local counterpart the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) will coordinate and implement the project in Sri Lanka.

The agreement for the supply of roofing sheets was signed by S. S. Roy Burman, General Manager of PEC Ltd. (India) and Major General Sarath Munasinghe, Chairman of NHDA on Tuesday at the auditorium of the General Treasury with the participation of S. B. Divarathne, Deputy Secretary to the Treasury and W. D. Ailapperuma, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Plantation Infrastructure.

The amount of sheets to be distributed among the families will consist of 3,309,560 corrugated sheets and 396,025 plain sheets for 800 houses in each electorate at the rate of 26 corrugated sheets and three plain roofing sheets per house.

The first shipment of sheets under this agreement is expected to reach Colombo Port within the next few weeks and NHDA has made special arrangements for the speedy distribution to the electorate.

G. C. Kuttan, State Trading Corporation of India, M. G. T. Patil, Vice President, National Steel and Agro Industries Ltd. (India) and Piyal Ganepola, General Manager (NHDA) participated at the signing of the agreement.
