Ex-soldiers commend Defence Minister

The Association of Disabled Ex-Service Personnel yesterday hailed Defence Minister Tilak Marapana for his pledge to safeguard the interests of disabled war heroes and cater to the families of those who have laid down their lives in defence of the nation or gone missing made during his interview with Swarnavahini's Kinihira programme on Tuesday night.

The Association in a press release said that Minister Marapana during his interview emphasised that the government would safeguard the interests of disabled war heroes and cater to the welfare of the families of others who had laid down their lives to protect the nation or gone missing continuously and that a cabinet paper was being formulated to resolve pension anomalies of service personnel.

The release signed by Association President H. K. Asoka Dayaratne said no other government has offered such a guarantee to the war heroes and their families during the last 20 years.

As war heroes it is their fervent hope that war would never recur in this country again.

They also hoped to see the peace process launched by the government achieving success. As a mark of gratitude to the government for its pledge they would never allow any opportunistic political party or group to sabotage the peace process.
