Police high-tech plan to nab traffic offenders

by Sarath Malalasekera and Asanga Warnakulasuriya

The Police Department has decided to go high-tech in the detection of Traffic offenders with the setting up of a communications network linking islandwide Police stations with the Police Headquarters traffic database.

"With the networking facility, details of accidents, including the name, vehicle No., number of casualties, road and division will be entered by trained policeman in the respective police stations to the central database, Director Traffic SSP S. M. Wickremasingha said yesterday.

The names of every offender under warrant will be in the database which will prevent the Police issuing another warrant to the same person. In the past, there were instances where the law breakers, under warrant were issued several warrants from different police stations, the SSP said.

The first step of networking islandwide police stations was initiated by the Acting IGP Indra De Silva yesterday at Police Headquarters where 40 computers worth over Rs. 3 million was handed over to 40 stations in an around Colombo. Under the traffic management strategic plan initiated by the Transport Ministry and Police and funded by SIDA, ADB and NDF, a complete database comprising 400 computers will be available by May 2004.

The Acting IGP stressed the importance of legislation that will bring both the will and skill backed by resources towards the betterment of Traffic Police and public. "I don't think the conditions of the highways are to blame for the increasing number of accidents but the significant increase in people using the motorway has led to the rise, the Acting IGP said.

The changes also include replacing of radarguns with laser guns capable of detecting several speeding vehicle at one instance, digital alcoholmeters, headlight meters and etc. Senior DIGs Administration Gamini Randeni, Jayatissa Herath, Bodhi Liyanage, DIGs Headquarters Jayantha Wickremaratna, DIGs Daya Jayasundera, Gamini Navaratne and Director Public Relations SSPs Renzie Perera, Gamini Karunatilleke and Y. P. R. M. Lafeer were also present.
