Vimalothaya Classical Bharatha Natya Kendra's annual classical Bharatha Natya recital 'Gurukula Arathana' was presented recently at the New Katherisan Hall, Colombo. The chief guests were D. M. Swaminathan and Mrs. Gayatri Swaminathan.

The guest of honour was Mrs. Reenat Sandhu, the directress of the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo.

The programme began with Vinayagar Vanthanam, presented by Dharshi Sundaramorthy, who also presented 'Arupadai', and 'Ennaavil', all of which were exquisitely done. Pushpanjali and another three pieces were presented by baby the brigade, Abirami Ganaraj, Abishalini Sri Baleswaran, Lakshmini Lingeswaran. These three artistes, displayed considerable skill, and their movements were graceful.

Alaripu, Jetheswararam, Sabtham and Thillana, some of the classical pieces, were presented by a group of senior students. Mathuri Raja, presented a 'Thevaram and Edathu Patham' in Kamas raga and Andal Thirupavai, in Ragamaliga, both of which were very well done and she kept the thala well.

Ashvika Thiyagaratnam, presented a Keerthanam on Lord Ganesha, in which Nirtha and Nirthiya were interwoven Ashvika executed both very well.

Nivetha Naidu Kumaran presented 'Neethane', a classical piece on Lord Krishna. In this song Yasotha, exhorts Lord Krishna, to mend his ways. She also presented a kurathi. Nivetha displayed considerable poise in her expressions. Shamini Wijetunge presented 'Vandadum' in the raga Hari Kampothi, set to Rupaka thala; she also presented another keerthanam on Lord Siva in Kamas raga. Shamini performed both these pieces with considerable skill and verve.

Kendra's directress Subashini Pathmanathan, who has a reputation of being one of the Sri Lanka's top most Bharatha Natya dancers, presented Subramaniya Barathi's composition 'Nenchill Uram'. This was followed by a sloka from 'Bhagawath Geetha', which was preached by Lord Krishna to Aruchuna in the Mahabaratha battle field. Both these pieces were never before heard in the Sri Lankan dance halls.

Subashini rendered both these songs with emotional involvement.

Subashini presented a varnam 'Maa Mohal' in Kamas raga choreographed by her guru the late Padmashree Vazuvoor Ramiahpillai who also rendered the nattuvangam.

Subashini's matchless performance and her guru's nattuvangam won loud applause. She also presented Thiruthandakam a religious hymn and a moving piece, composed by the saint Appar, and was followed by another keerthanam 'Tanthi Thaai' in Shanmugapriya raga both evoked memories of yesteryears.

The selection of songs were excellent. The nattuvangam and choreography were rendered by Subashini Pathmanathan, vocal by V. Ganeshalingam, mirudangam by A. Ragunathan, violin by Yogambihai Kathiravelu, flute by Vimalothayam Pathmanathan and morchang by R. Ratnadurai.

The Tamil compere was S. Viswanathan, and the English compere was Shamini Serasinghe.

It was an excellent performance, well choreographed and flawlessly presented.
