Colombo fashion weekend to boost local industry

'Colombo Fashion Weekend' based on the concept of the 'International Fashion Week' will be held on November 15 and 16 at the Galle Face Hotel. The principal sponsor of 'Colombo Fashion Weekend' will be the George O Marie line recently launched by Readywear Industries, while the other main sponsors are Mallika Hemachandra Jewellers and Mobitel .

Colombo Fashion Weekend will comprise three fashion shows held daily from 7 to 10.00 p.m.

'Fashion TV' which has been the single most important media vehicle for the success of fashion worldwide will cover 'Colombo Fashion Weekend' and will telecast it internationally.

Organised by OSB, the Fashion, Entertainment and Image Consultants, Colombo Fashion Weekend will include local designers Michael Wijesuriya, Senake De Silva, Andre Estafan and Yolande Aluvihare, while India's fashion icon and guru Prasad Bidapa who is a partner of OSB will be responsible for organising the 'Colombo Fashion Weekend'. Leading Indian designers Suneet Varma, Manoviraj Khosla and Satya Paul will showcase some of their creations at 'Colombo Fashion Weekend', while a crew of 23 comprising light and sound consultants, choreographers, stage managers and models will be here from India to lend their expertise and participate in 'Colombo Fashion Weekend'.

Yet another feature of 'Colombo Fashion Weekend' will be honouring Sri Lanka's fashion icon of the local fashion industry Kirthi Sri Karunaratne with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award'.

The chief guest on November 15 will be Colombo Mayor Prasanna Goonewardene, while Minister Ravi Karunanayake will be the chief guest on November 16.

Partner and Consultant of OSB Ajai Vir Singh told the media in Colombo yesterday that they were indebted to their sponsors and partners for their ready collaboration as staging of 'Colombo Fashion Weekend' as opposed to the 'Fashion Week' which is the norm in other countries, entailed a cost of over Rs 6 million.

He also expressed OSB's appreciation of the ready response of Minister Ravi Karunanayake and his Ministry, as well as that of the Mayor who expressed unstinted support for this event. Singh said that from Sri Lanka's point of view , the concept of 'Fashion Week' was a tremendous boost to the local fashion and garment industry.

"Come the post 2005 period when quotas no longer exist, should any of Sri Lanka's leading garment manufacturers wish to launch and showcase their own designer labels to market them in the fashion capitals of the world, 'Colombo Fashion Week' would be the ideal window opportunity to do so, giving them the opportunity and giving them the protection to venture forth as branded retailers".

One of the highlights of Colombo Fashion Weekend will be the selection of two designers with potential who would be sent for training to India where they would gain experience working in the big fashion houses.

" There will be a stringent criteria specified for the selection of these two designers" said Bidapa .
