By Bernard Perera Sri Lanka Turf Club will conduct the Race Meet in Nuwara-Eliya as part of the Deepawali Festival celebrations named as 'Volvo Cup' Race Meet on October 25, 2003. The meet is fully sponsored by Swedish Trading Company the agents for Volvo vehicles which is also a subsidiary of Chandra Senanayake Group of Companies. These details were disclosed to the press at a meeting held on Wednesday evening at Colpetty. The days events comprise six races for various categories of horses. The main event for the day will be the race for thoroughbred horses Class I which will be run over a distance of 9 furlongs. The race attracted all leading horses owned by top stables in Nuwara-Eliya. The leading horse owners who have already forwarded their entries for the meet are Nigel Austin, Gamini Kodituwakku, Dr. M.S. Noohu, Shantha de Soysa (Monaro Group) Anurath Abeyratne and Gamini Jayaratne. The spectators on this are sure to witness a good racing with live commentaries from experienced Indian commentator. It was also stated that gates will be free and only a nominal fee will be charged for the grand stand. All this briefing it was also revealed that the sponsors are willing to come forward to sponsor an event during the Festival Season in Nuwara-Eliya in April next year. The event to be worked off on this day are as follows: Volvo Cup: Thoroughbred Horses Class I - 9 furlongs handicap. XC 90 Cup: Thoroughbred Horses Class I and II - 7 furlongs handicap. S60 Cup: Thoroughbred Horses Class III - 7 furlongs handicap. S80 Cup: Thoroughbred Horses Class IV - 5 furlongs handicap. Swedish Trading Co. Cup: 3/4 Bred Horses Class I - 7 furlongs handicap 1.
