34 teams for Mercantile Rugby sevens

34 teams will take part in the Mercantile Rugby Sevens which will be worked off at the CR and FC grounds and Royal rugby grounds today and tomorrow. The tournament will be sponsored by Dialog GSM limited Defending champions Hatton National Bank will go all out to retain the Cup Championship for the third successive year but will face stiff competition from Seylan Bank, Access Group, John Keells Sampath Bank. N'Car Group and Ceylinco.

The most outstanding player of the tournament will be awarded the Mohan Daniel Memorial Trophy while the Best Player of the final will receive the Pemraj Peiris Memorial Trophy.

HNB's Lakala Perera carried away both these trophies last year.

The tournament will be conducted on a new format this year. The teams will be drawn into eight groups. The group winners will play in the Cup Championship quarter-finals. The losers of the Cup Championship quarter-finals will play in the Plate semi-finals while the winners will play in the Cup Championship semi-finals. The second and third placed teams in each group will play in the bowl championship.

Last year HNB beat Sampath Bank 'A' by 21-14 in the final N'Car Group clinched the Plate Title by beating HNB 'B' 34-0 in the final.
