Rs. 3 million allocated to complete Horagolla Bridge

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy South Group Correspondent

Rs. 3 million has been allocated to complete the balance work on the Horagolla Bridge over the Nikal Oya in Horagolla in the Rattota electorate, said the Minister of Central Region Development, Tissa Attanayake.

Minister Attanayake said that the foundation stone for this bridge was laid during the previous regime and only a small part of the work had been carried out and after which it went into neglect. Once this bridge is complete it will benefit over 300 families who will have an access road to the villages of Wellanwatte, Horagolla, Pathirage and Maussagolla and also these villages will be inter-connected to the other roads.

Minister Tissa Attanayake said that just to lay the foundation stone and carry out a little work and thereafter pay no attention to it is a sorry state of affairs. It will be necessary for us to ascertain the amount of funds allocated to this project and why it has been virtually abandoned. It has always been his objective when he lays the foundation for any project, he will do so only if the necessary funds had been allocated and also fix a time frame for its completion.

The Minister in conclusion stated that the Government is in the process of constructing several express highways and has also started on a large scale development programme of development of rural roads, bridges, improvements to existing electrification schemes for which large sums of monies had been allocated.

The main objective is to improve the living conditions of the rural masses and increase their earning capacity and add value to the properties in the areas by the provision of basic amenities like, water, electricity, roads and transport.
