News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | A significant growth in trade & commerce with India - Minister Participating in the Indian Trade Fair organized by the Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry of Sri Lanka as Guest of Honour at the Exhibition & Convention Centre Industries Minister Rohitha Bogollagama stated that in addition to the traditional ties Sri Lanka enjoyed with India in terms of bilateral relations a significant growth in trade and commerce have been noticed in the beginning of the 21st century. This upward surge is in the main, due to the close interaction between the peoples of the two countries in the field of culture, industry, and economic development and in matters of trade and commerce, which is most encouraging. This is the third occasion he is participating in an exhibition of this nature focusing attention on industry and product development our giant neighbour is engaged in, he said. Enhancement of ties in the industrial and economic sectors will augur well for both countries and India has taken advantage of the concept of free economy pursued by Sri Lanka. 50% of its investment in the SAARC region is in Sri Lanka and it is high time that we open up a window to the world through our joint venture collaboration. He observed that while walking through the stalls he noticed some of the products displayed are of international standards at reasonable prices which could not only be marketed locally but also penetrate the regional and international markets. In order to encourage more interaction on joint ventures he would appoint a committee comprising of the Chairmen, Board of Investment, Industrial Development Board and the Ministry in various fields especially on product development. |
