Clearing the path to peace is an arduous task. In that effort it is vital to pick the threads and re-establish all severed links between the two communities across the ethnic divide. This rail link between the Mannar Islands and the mainland is one such landmark that was to disappear during the two decade long ethnic war. The peace process has revived hopes for rebuilding these vanished monuments of unity that prevailed between the Tamils and Sinhalese in a different era. Here the Mannar train station (above) and the rail bridge (below) now in a dilapidated state after having been destroyed in the early 1990s await restoration to bestow the peace dividend to the long suffering people.
