Hakeem meets Canadian FM

by Rashomi Silva

Port, Shipping and Eastern Development Minister Rauff Hakeem will meet visiting Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham today prior to his departure to attend the Organisation of Islamic Leaders (OIL), in Malaysia.

During his meeting with Graham, Hakeem is expected to discuss the ongoing peace process and the importance of considering the Muslim community as an important stake holder in the process, a spokesman said.

The Canadian Minister arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday on a three day official visit. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has nominated Hakeem as his representative to the tenth Islamic Leaders conference. Sri Lanka was granted the status of observer at the conference by OIL.

The OIL is an organisation of the world Muslim countries where 51 countries will participate. It is aimed at developing the welfare of Muslim countries around the world. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe was invited to participate in the OIL meeting by Malaysian Premier Dr. Mahathier Mohammed when Premier Wickremesinghe met him on his official visit to Malaysia last month.
