News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Job training for 5000 graduates under Sarasavi Saviya programme by Ananda Kannangara A record 5000 unemployed graduates in the country will be absorbed to private sector institutions to receive special vocational training under the Sarasavi Saviya programme initiated by the Government on a directive of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has also made a clear assurance to all 25,916 unemployed graduates in the country, registered with the Labour Department that they will be provided jobs in the mercantile sector with a 12-month comprehensive vocational training under the Sarasavi Saviya scheme. The World Bank has granted US dollars 10 million for this project. During the one year training period a graduate will be paid a fixed monthly allowance of Rs. 4000 by the Sarasavi Saviya Institution (SSI) while an additional allowance of Rs. 2000 will be paid by the employer. According to the directive of the Prime Minister all graduates receiving training will also be given a four-month special training on English proficiency and the knowledge of Information Technology. Sarasavi Saviya Institution Director Akila Kariyawasam said that discussions are being held with Deshamanya Lalith Kotalawala to grant special loans between the range of Rs. 500,000 to 1.5 million for 1000 unemployed youth to start self-employment projects. |
