Sports Medicine Unit under wraps

Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Johnston Fernando is to take strict action against the Sports Medicine Unit top officials who had purchased 25,000 massaging get tubes for last year's Asian Championships in Colombo.

A senior official of the Sports Ministry told the 'Daily News' yesterday that special investigation made on the alleged irregular purchase of gel tubes worth Rs. seven million, has found irregularities in the transaction which has been done without following tender procedures.

A special inquiry done by the auditors of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has disclosed that the purchase has been made without following any Governmental procedures and approvals.

The auditors have handed over their findings to Minister Fernando, who is due to take stern action against the top doctors of the Sports Medicine Unit of the Ministry of Sports. The Ministry official said the bulk purchase had been made last year without any approval, whereas only one fifth of the said stock was actually needed.
