Do not curb workers' rights - Opposition Leader

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse said the Opposition will take action if they attempt to curb the rights of country's working class.

Addressing a media briefing on Friday he said, that 19 employees of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) who participated in the countrywide protest jointly organised by 32 state and private sector trade unions on October 7 have been interdicted. He said over 10,000 SLPA employees had joined this protest campaign during their lunch hour. It was organised to protest the privatisation of State institutions, curb the trade unions and demanding a pay hike.

However, the SLPA has already interdicted 19 employees who joined this protest while information has been received that letters are to be sent to more SLPA employees in this regard. Some female employees have faced harassment after participating in this protest, he said. Rajapakse said the Labour Ordinance has reaffirmed the workers' rights.

Therefore the Government has no right to curb the working class.
